Course overview

We discuss the definition of Medical Ethics, its uses for practitioners, its values, codes of conduct, the Hippocratic Oath, how it defines relationships, medical confidentiality, medical errors, iatrogenesis, duties of a practitioner and patient. Its history, COVID-19, ethical values including the four principles, patient autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, double effect, respect for human rights, social justice or solidarity, acceptance of ambiguity in medicine, conflicts between beneficence and non-maleficence, between autonomy and beneficence/non-maleficence, euthanasia, informed consent, confidentiality, privacy and the internet, control, resolution and enforcement, guidelines, cultural concerns, other cultures and healthcare - Buddhist medicine, Chinese medicine, Sun Simiao, conflicts of interest, referrals, vendor relationships, treatment of relatives, sexual relationships, and futility.
