DNV: AN ACCREDITATION ALTERNATIVE TO TJC

Course overview

Regulatory accreditation is required by hospitals as a condition of reimbursement by Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance companies. The Joint Commission is the main accrediting body in the United States. In 2008, Det Norske Veritas Healthcare obtained deemed status from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for the right to accredit hospitals. DNV is different from TJC in that it requires annual on-site surveys and the ISO 9001 Quality Management System is part of the accreditation plan. ISO 9001 contains a statistical self-monitoring system to support improved quality and a safe patient environment. The tone of the DNV survey is collaborative, with a focus on improvement. Currently, DNV has accredited more than 220 hospitals, a significant increase in facilities using DNV as an alternative to TJC.
