Course overview

The role of a first responder is to help a victim when they need medical attention or rescue from a fire incident, but what about protecting yourself from the risks you are walking into on the scene? Donning the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is one step. Also, arming yourself with an understanding of the possible threats you may face and how your employer is required to keep you safe is an added layer. In this course, we will discuss human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a bloodborne pathogen that you may come in contact with on-scene. We will also discuss the OSHA standard set in place for employers to offer education and safe working conditions for their employees and what to do if you come in contact with HIV-positive fluids.
