Course overview

Trauma affects all areas and contexts outlined in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process, Fourth Edition. Individuals who have experienced trauma may face challenges in social participation, daily activities, and beyond. Trauma influences not only the person but also their interactions within all domains This course will introduce OTs, OTAs and students to trauma, trauma informed care, trauma assessment and treatment, and self-identification of trauma and its impact on therapeutic use of self. Use of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and the Kawa model will be explored for discussion of treatment approaches. Target Audience: Occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, occupational therapy students This occupational therapy continuing education course uses the following instructional methods: visual aides (ie slides), discussion board, guided note taking, and learning, and practice opportunities. Explain how to discuss trauma with a client using appropriate techniques Identify his/her/their own response to trauma, and how to use or not use personal disclosure when treating a specific client using ACES. 4. Identify when a person is suicidal, and take appropriate steps based on their assessment.
