Course overview

Understanding Chronic Psychological Disorders is a 6-hour live webinar designed to provide Florida licensed massage therapists with foundational knowledge of chronic psychological conditions that commonly impact physical and emotional well-being. Nearly one in six Americans experience mental health dysfunction, and 16 to 20 percent of these individuals suffer from chronic, treatment-resistant psychological disorders. This course introduces massage therapists to a wide range of chronic psychological conditions, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, hoarding disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, bipolar disorders, eating disorders, and personality disorders. Participants will explore the neuroinflammatory theory of psychological dysfunction and the biological and psychological underpinnings of each diagnosis. The course will review clinical diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, causes, and pathophysiology, as well as the most effective treatments such as medication, psychotherapy, and emerging interventions. Massage therapists will gain awareness of how chronic psychological disorders can manifest in physical tension, emotional dysregulation, and impaired client communication. This awareness enhances trauma-informed and client-centered care as outlined under Chapter 480, Florida Statutes.
