Course overview
This program discusses occupational therapy (OT) care for the postpartum patient. Topics include the four main components of the Perinatal Maternal Health Promotion Model; common issues or concerns related to mental health after childbirth; reasons occupational engagement and participation are impacted during the postpartum period; gaps in the care of postpartum women; OTs distinct value in postpartum care; a case scenario to identify at least two potential areas of intervention; patterns between physical and mental impact on occupation for women in postpartum; practice-based evidence; and interventions or plans of action to address the needs of individuals with postpartum depression. Additional topics include helpful definitions; Perinatal Maternal Health Promotion Model; Patient-Environment-Occupation (PEO) Model; and the OT's role in developing interventions to address mental health, pelvic health, breastfeeding, and physical wellness. There is also a discussion about pathways for, and the distinct value of, OTs in postpartum care.
