Course overview

Dysphagia is a condition in which swallowing is complex and/or painful due to oropharyngeal or esophageal (or both) abnormalities secondary to a motility disorder or mechanical obstruction. Complications of dysphagia include an increased risk of aspiration, aspiration pneumonia, chemical pneumonitis, malnutrition, morbidity, and mortality. Aspiration can impair the client's ability to speak, swallow, breathe, or maintain a patent airway. Clinicians commonly misidentify dysphagia as a typical sign of aging, making nursing continuing education in dysphagia critical for the early diagnosis and management of aspiration.
