What you'll learn

Upon completion of this course, learners will have met the following learning objectives:

  1. Learners will differentiate epileptic from nonepileptic paroxysmal events using clinical history, physical examination, EEG findings, and neuroimaging while recognizing conditions that mimic seizure activity.
  2. Learners will distinguish between seizure types and epilepsy syndromes by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) framework and explain how classification assists in diagnosis, treatment selection, and prognosis.
  3. Learners will recognize treatment strategies for those with idiopathic generalized epilepsy, focal epilepsy, and developmental and epileptic encephalopathies, integrating pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options based on seizure type, etiology, and patient-specific considerations.
  4. Learners will identify candidates for advanced interventions such as epilepsy surgery, neurostimulation devices (VNS, RNS, DBS), and dietary therapy based on diagnostic criteria, seizure origin, and clinical response to medication.
  5. Learners will recognize epilepsy-related risks and safety strategies with clients and caregivers, including education on medication adherence, SUDEP prevention, activity restrictions, and psychosocial support.

Course overview

This course presents healthcare providers with the skills and insight needed to evaluate, differentiate, and manage epileptic and nonepileptic seizure disorders across diverse populations. The course highlights the importance of accurate classification of seizure types and epileptic syndromes - including idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE), focal epilepsy, and developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE) - to guide effective treatment strategies and improve long-term outcomes. Learners will explore seizure etiologies, genetic mutations, cortical malformations, and provoking events caused by metabolic or structural insults. The course addresses common seizure mimics such as syncope, psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), and movement disorders.
