- Learners will differentiate the classes of antiarrhythmic drugs using the traditional Vaughan Williams and the updated Vaughan Williams–Singh classification systems.
- Learners will identify appropriate antiarrhythmic drug therapy for distinct types of ventricular arrhythmias, including ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF).
- Learners will evaluate the indications, mechanisms of action, and adverse effect profiles of Class I, II, III, and IV antiarrhythmic agents, including considerations for use in structural heart disease and inherited arrhythmia syndromes.
- Learners will identify evidence-based guidelines for antiarrhythmic drug selection in special populations, including individuals who are pregnant, pediatric patients, and those with renal or hepatic impairment.
- Learners will examine ion channel targets, electrophysiologic effects, pharmacokinetics, rhythm control, proarrhythmic risk, and individualized therapy in diverse populations.
Course overview
This course explores the pharmacologic management of ventricular arrhythmias (VAs), including ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF), with a focus on the clinical application of antiarrhythmic drugs (AADs) across various cardiac pathologies. Learners will analyze pharmacological resources, including mechanisms, indications, and adverse effects within the Vaughan Williams and modified Vaughan Williams-Singh classifications, covering sodium, potassium, calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers, and agents with novel or multi-class actions. This course includes drug selection in structural heart disease, inherited arrhythmia syndromes (e.g., Brugada, LQTS, CPVT), and considerations for use in pediatrics, pregnancy, renal or hepatic impairment, and older adults.
