Course overview

Working with trauma survivors often means working with individuals with substance use and mental health concerns. This self-paced course focuses on how trauma can cause or increase the use of substances and how substance use coercion can impact treatment and healing. This course also explores how to focus callers who are under the influence and empower a recovery mindset. Finally, the training also discusses safety planning with callers who are actively using substances, as well as Motivational Interviewing concepts and techniques to use on a crisis line. Objectives: After completing this course, participants will be able to: 1. Identify the ways that substance use and trauma intersect. 2. Use safety planning strategies for callers who are actively using substances. 3. Apply Motivational Interviewing core concepts and techniques to crisis line work.
