Course overview

This year program will continue to focus on the numerous current concerns surrounding EMS provider safety and well-being as well as cost-effective medical protocols, use of new technologies and evolving deployment strategies to better manage the operational aspects of EMS. Of note, resolutions for the prior longstanding issues of EMS staffing crises will be better addressed based on new experiences of several faculty and their EMS systems. Multiple casualty incidents (MCIs) will again be emphasized in the wake of escalating violence, school shootings as well as future planning and preparation for disasters and system status surges. The sessions will not only address the residual impact of the pandemic on EMS, but also drill down on evolving threats including climate change and new biological and terrorist threats. Best practices will be inventoried and issues addressing improved budgetary compliance, training, and skill maintenance will be front and center. Equipment and procedural decision-making and evaluation will be examined as well as the complex issues of coordinating patient care efforts with other public safety agencies, receiving facilities and, now, alternative destinations and dispositions for 911 patients beyond perfunctory transport to a hospital. In addition to highly-choreographed, generally Socratic type, question-driven lectures, the global team of faculty will also hold interactive sessions with the audience in a series of panels.
