What you'll learn

Upon completion of this course, learners will have met the following learning objectives:

  1. Learners will describe the epidemiology, common clinical presentations, and differential diagnostic challenges associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), including its typical late-stage detection and high mortality rate.
  2. Learners will differentiate between resectable, borderline resectable, and unresectable pancreatic tumors and explain how these distinctions influence treatment planning and surgical eligibility.
  3. Learners will analyze the role of emerging diagnostic tools, including blood-based biomarkers and advanced imaging modalities, in improving the early detection and differentiation of PDAC from benign or inflammatory pancreatic conditions.
  4. Learners will recognize the components and clinical rationale behind a multimodal treatment approach to pancreatic cancer, including neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgical resection techniques (e.g., Whipple procedure), and adjuvant therapy.
  5. Learners will discover the role of palliative care interventions—such as pain management, enzyme replacement therapy, and nutritional support in the context of improving symptom control and quality of life for clients with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Course overview

This comprehensive course explores the clinical challenges and current strategies involved in the differential diagnosis, staging, treatment, and palliative management of pancreatic cancer, with a focus on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) the most prevalent and lethal form of the disease. Participants will examine the epidemiology, risk factors, and nonspecific symptomatology contributing to delayed diagnosis alongside diagnostic imaging techniques and the role of blood-based biomarkers. Through case-based learning and Socratic questioning, this course equips clinicians with the knowledge needed to improve early detection, enhance diagnostic accuracy, and support clients through all phases of disease progression.
