What you'll learn
Upon completion of this course, learners will have met the following learning objectives:
- Learners will recall key diagnostic criteria for ACS by listing the role of ECG, troponin levels, and symptom presentation within the first 10 minutes of a client's arrival at the emergency department.
- Learners will identify the clinical differences between STEMI and NSTE-ACS and summarize their early management strategies.
- Learners will apply risk stratification tools such as GRACE and TIMI scores to determine the appropriate treatment pathway for clients with varying ACS presentations.
- Learners will differentiate pharmacologic options (e.g., antiplatelet agents, anticoagulants, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, statins) in clients with ACS by evaluating age-related risks and benefits.
- Learners will formulate a multidisciplinary discharge and rehabilitation plan for a client recovering from ACS, integrating clinical findings, comorbidities, and treatment strategies.
Course overview
This course explores acute coronary syndrome (ACS), emphasizing the importance of prompt diagnosis, guideline-directed therapies, risk stratification, and individualized treatment approaches. Participants will examine the full clinical spectrum of ACS, including STEMI, NSTEMI, and unstable angina, focusing on early ECG interpretation, troponin testing, and risk stratification tools such as GRACE and TIMI scores. The curriculum integrates guideline-directed medical therapies, advanced revascularization strategies, and the role of noninvasive imaging and pharmacotherapy while addressing the unique diagnostic and treatment challenges in older populations with multimorbidity and atypical presentations. The course emphasizes antiplatelet therapy selection, lipid-lowering strategies, and balancing thrombotic and bleeding risks in older adults. Through case-based learning, participants will develop critical decision-making skills for prehospital care, PCI optimization, and comprehensive discharge planning, including cardiac rehabilitation, secondary prevention, and long-term risk reduction.
