Course overview

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is the backflow of food, liquids and gastric acid from the stomach into the esophagus. Healthcare professionals as a team play an important role in detecting early symptoms of GERD and helping patients manage their disease. A number of pre-existing conditions increase the risk of GERD, including but not limited to obesity, smoking and certain medications. With appropriate lifestyle and diet changes, many of the symptoms of GERD can be mitigated. Medications and surgical interventions may be required when lifestyle changes are unsuccessful.
