Addressing the Behavioral Health Needs of Rural Populations

Course overview
While behavioral health disorders affect individuals in all regions of the country, the frequency of certain diagnoses and unmet treatment needs are not equally distributed. Individuals in rural areas receive less screening and treatment for behavioral health concerns compared to those in urban settings. When they do receive care, it is often from less specialized medical or behavioral health professionals due to the shortage of specialists in rural communities. This course will review the primary behavioral health needs of rural populations and the barriers to accessing treatment for those conditions. It will present evidence-based practices that are recommended to meet those needs. Ethical considerations unique to rural behavioral health practice, including dual relationships and confidentiality concerns, will also be discussed.
