On-demand/recorded course Mental health professionals frequently encounter scenarios in which they need to ethically navigate multiple/dual relationships to maintain safety and security for those they serve. Multiple relationships can range from unavoidable, common, or even mandatory in some situations (Zur, 2017). At the same time, non-sexual dual relationships are among the most common ethical violations for mental health professionals (ASPPB, 2024; Rollins & Grames, 2022; Wilkinson et al., 2019). Therefore, it is important to not only have reliable ethical decision-making frameworks to use when navigating these tricky situations but also consider a variety of risk management strategies to potentially shrink future ethical dilemmas. This webinar focuses on elements, including important cultural considerations, that mental health professionals can evaluate when navigating multiple/dual relationships. The presenter will discuss ethical codes from various disciplines and offer a variety of risk mitigation strategies that can be used. Finally, an ethical decision-making model grounded in positive psychology (Knapp & Fingerhut, 2024) will be presented and applied to at least one ethical scenario. Overall, participants will leave this webinar with a better understanding and effective tools to ethically navigate dual and multiple relationships as mental health professionals.
