Course overview
The human body is designed to function most effectively at a temperature of 98.6 F (37 C). Excess heat is released in one of three ways: radiation, convection, and evaporation. As much as 20% to 25% of heat loss occurs through evaporation. The inability to adequately regulate body temperature may lead to heat stroke and heat exhaustion. These conditions can be lethal and must be treated promptly. Healthcare providers as a team are instrumental in recognizing heat-related illnesses and teaching people about the dangers of such illnesses; young children and older people are especially vulnerable. Healthcare providers across disciplines must be aware of the symptoms and common treatment for heat illness.
