This course focuses on injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance training in the fastpitch softball athlete. The material is relevant to sports medicine clinicians, strength and performance coaches, and personal trainers working with softball pitchers. This course is designed to fill in the gaps between injury prevention, rehabilitation and performance training. Hour 1 starts with an epidemiological overview of softball injuries, including a discussion on the most common softball injuries. A detailed phase-based biomechanical analysis of the fastpitch/ windmill pitch will be presented. Common biomechanical faults and corresponding corrective exercises will be presented for each phase. Hour 2 will transition into the evaluation and treatment of common softball fastpitch injuries, including scapula dyskinesis and shoulder instability. In hour 3, the evaluation and treatment of SLAP lesions, posterior impingement and subacromial impingement/ rotator cuff disorders will be discussed. An evidence-based softball injury prevention/ performance optimization program will be outlined. Performance training is discussed with information on key performance factors, specific exercises, interval throwing programs, weighted ball programs and return to play criteria. This course is designed to fill in the gaps between injury prevention, rehabilitation and performance training.
