Introduction to Geriatric Syndromes

Geriatric syndromes such as falls, polypharmacy, frailty and delirium continue to be highly prevalent in older persons while contributing to significant morbidity and mortality. This enduring material discusses a general overview and definition of geriatric syndromes using a case-based approach with clinical examples, their contributions to morbidity and mortality and a systematic approach to managing patients presenting with these issues in clinical practice. Educational Objectives: 1. Identify, define and discuss examples of various geriatric syndromes, in particular falls, polypharmacy, frailty and delirium. 2. Describe the contribution of geriatric syndromes to morbidity and mortality in older persons. 3. Describe a systematic approach to preventing and managing common geriatric syndromes in the older population. Estimated time to complete this activity is 1 hour.
