More than two-thirds of adults in the U.S., an estimated 149 million people, are overweight or obese. As healthcare professionals of various disciplines, we encounter overweight and obese patients in many settings, and we don't have to be experts to make an impact. Conversations of five minutes or less can contribute to changing eating behaviors of our patients. People listen to their healthcare providers: One study showed that patients who are counseled to lose weight by a healthcare professional are three times more likely to try to do so than those who do not receive such counseling.
