Course overview

Dry needling is NOT a one-size fits all intervention. This course will cover different pain classifications (local-spinal-widespread) and the implications for dry needling practice in order to optimize patient outcomes. Known pathophysiological pain mechanisms will be described as it relates to inflammation, soft tissue, and nervous system adaptation that leads to spinal and widespread hyperalgesia. The neurophysiological effects for the different applications of dry needling will be presented including; superficial and deep, percutaneous electrical stimulation, as well as various needle manipulation techniques. A framework for approaching these different pain classifications using dry needling will be outlined based on the presented neurophysiological mechanisms of the therapy. Case application exercises will be discussed to reinforce these concepts.
