Course overview
This course provides participants with an overview of who can diagnose, what the new changes to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) mean, how they are pertinent to crisis workers, and how to begin engaging in diagnostic and assessment talk in a crisis setting. Lethality assessments are reviewed. DSM-5-TR sections that cover depressive disorders, anxiety disorders and trauma and substance use disorders are also reviewed to provide diagnostic tools for crisis workers' toolboxes. Objectives: After completing this course, participants will be able to: 1. Identify which new DSM-5-TR changes pertain to them as crisis workers and how these changes can help assess severity. 2. Access tools to engage in lethality assessments in a crisis setting that can lead to diagnostic impressions. 3. Identify questions they can ask about depression, anxiety, trauma or substance use disorders that can help with a diagnostic impression to aid referral to the correct place.
