General practice veterinarians play a crucial role in every step of a pets cancer journey, from diagnosis, to referral, and to management of the cancer patient. For patients that are unable to pursue referral, general practice veterinarians can safely and effectively manage these patients. In this course, we will cover the principles of chemotherapy in veterinary medicine, including common chemotherapeutics used in veterinary patients, safe handling of chemotherapy drugs, common chemotherapy side effects and how to manage the most common side effects. Participants will learn to identify veterinary patients that are suitable candidates for chemotherapy treatment that can safely be administered in general practice, communicate necessary information with those clients, and develop individualized treatment plans for their patients. This course will address potential side effects and complications of chemotherapy and provide strategies for monitoring and managing these risks. This lecture is designed to build your confidence in oncology care, and your confidence in safely administering specific chemotherapeutics in practice. Youll walk away with a stronger foundation to assist in management with chemotherapy of veterinary cancer patients that are unable to pursue referral.
