Course overview

As medicine continues to progress with effective life-saving treatments, patients have a better chance at survival. However, with this time spent in critical care units, individuals may present with physical, cognitive, and psychological impairments. As a member of the interdisciplinary team treating these patients, it is important to be mindful of the significant impact this has on quality of life. The Rehabilitation team can play a pivotal role in maximizing a patient's functional independence and help optimize recovery. This course equips participants with a greater understanding of Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) and the impact it has on a person's functional recovery and quality of life. It reviews evidence-based research and current clinical practice guidelines (ex. management of pain, agitation, etc.) to enhance the practice of the Rehabilitation team. Rehabilitation is an integral part of the interdisciplinary team providing a holistic approach to complex patient care in the critical care setting.
