Gamers- individuals who engage in video gaming for extended periods- represent a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. While societal stereotypes once framed gaming as isolating or linked to introversion, the reality can be quite different. For people with disabilities, the virtual world provides freedom of movement, endless possibilities, and an inclusive space free from preconceived limitations. Gaming can foster social connection, counteracting isolation and promoting inclusion. For gamers who experience a traumatic event or medical diagnosis that alters their ability to play, this shift can be emotionally challenging. Gaming, however, can offer a pathway back to joy, identity, and community. Occupational therapists, with their holistic approach to treatment, address mental health, physical needs, sensory concerns, and cognitive abilities. This comprehensive perspective enables them to create personalized adaptations to help patients re-engage with gaming. Adaptations may include utilizing in-game accessibility settings, recommending specialized hardware, or customizing controllers to improve usability.
