Rehabilitation interventions affect how our patients' bodies move and function by improving range of motion, strength, balance, and coordination. But what is the driving force behind these changes? This course introduces two key processes - neuroplasticity and motor learning - that underpin the remarkable changes we see in rehabilitation. Neuroplasticity is a normal and ongoing process that occurs across the human lifespan in response to internal and external stimuli; it is how the nervous system responds to repeated new information, sensory stimulation, development, damage, or dysfunction. Rehabilitation professionals rely on the power of neuroplasticity to make lasting changes in a patients nervous system. Motor learning is the process of acquiring and modifying movement patterns over time through practice and experience. Neuroplasticity is an underlying force of motor learning, and motor learning drives neuroplasticity. Together, these two neuroscience principles power rehabilitation interventions. The course explores these concepts and discusses their application in rehabilitation across commonly treated conditions.
