Course overview

Animals have demonstrated widespread ability to improve the health and well being of people of all ages, including those with acute and chronic medical conditions, psychiatric illnesses, and developmental challenges. Therapeutic animals ranging from cats and dogs to horses, rabbits, gerbils, birds, and fish, are used in outpatient psychotherapy, medical and dental offices, hospitals, and nursing care facilities. Animals are utilized to reach therapeutic goals in specialties including psychotherapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Study after study demonstrates the benefits of pet ownership for health and well being. Thus, it is important for all healthcare professionals to know about formal pet therapy as well as about the benefits individuals can derive from having pets as companions. This course explores how pet therapy, pets, and other animals can enhance our quality of life.
