According to estimates, about 30 million Americans suffer from dry eye disease, with more than nine million suffering from a moderate to severe form of it. In fact, 25% of patients in general eye clinics report symptoms of dry eye. Yet despite the fact that dry eye disease is one of the most common clinical entities optometrists encounter today, eye care as a discipline has yet to reach a consensus on the rationale for diagnosis and treatment. This program seeks to address this need by describing a wealth of new research that clarifies our understanding of appropriate diagnosis and management in light of our enhanced understanding about inflammatory processes.
