Course overview

The goal of this one-hour CE course is to review chronic kidney disease therapeutic options, outside of diet and fluids. IRIS diagnosis and staging will briefly be reviewed, as well common treatments for symptoms of kidney disease for both dogs and cats, including hypertension, proteinuria, and gastrointestinal signs. The main advantages and disadvantages of renal diets will also be summarized. The focus will then turn to the gut kidney axis and dysbiosis that occurs in chronic renal failure and the possible benefit of probiotics to support kidney health. The importance of phosphate management in chronic kidney disease will be described and research presented on the longevity of patients and phosphate target levels. Attendees will learn how to incorporate FGF-23 testing for improved phosphate control in feline patients. Different phosphate binding options, beyond renal diets, will be discussed. Hypokalemia management will also be presented.
