Course overview

This course prepares nurses with the knowledge, skills, and clinical judgment necessary to implement evidence-based, suicide-specific interventions across mental health, psychiatric, emergency, and outpatient settings. Grounded in current research and public health frameworks, the course emphasizes trauma-informed care, ethical reflection, and interdisciplinary collaboration in responding to individuals at risk for suicide. Learners will explore the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and psychological theories of suicidal behavior, with a focus on dynamic risk assessment and real-time clinical decision-making. The course covers validated screening tools, safety planning protocols, brief interventions, and prevention education. Special attention is given to high-risk populations, cultural considerations, and systemic barriers to care. After completing this course, nurses will develop competencies in counseling clients and families, restricting access to lethal means, and promoting continuity of care. The course also integrates digital tools, community-based strategies, and health system interventions to support a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention. By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to deliver compassionate, evidence-informed care that reduces suicide risk and fosters recovery, resilience, and hope.
