Several pancreatic conditions, including pancreatitis, can have genetic origins, and hereditary pancreatitis carries a significantly increased risk for pancreatic cancer. Pinpointing a genetic diagnosis can deepen understanding of the prognosis and help clarify risk for family members of affected individuals. Expanded next-generation sequencing panels can capture rarer, as well as more common causes of the condition, to better guide patient care. This webinar will review known genetic predisposing factors to acute or chronic pancreatitis, as well as define who may benefit from genetic testing. Objectives: 1. Define acute and chronic pancreatitis etiologies. 2. Recognize different genetic mutation pathways leading to pancreatitis. 3. Recall associations between hereditary pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. 4. Recognize when to consider genetic testing in pancreatitis evaluation.
