Course overview

Perimenopause and menopause, the drop in estrogen levels that usually occurs between ages 45 and 55, is accompanied by uncomfortable symptoms in approximately 75% of women. A complex set of physical and emotional responses may include hot flashes, insomnia, anxiety, depression, vaginal changes, urinary problems, fatigue, hair thinning or loss, memory problems, weight gain around the waist, and reduction in libido. The risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease and osteoporosis also increases as a woman's estrogen levels fall. This home study course provides detailed information on: (1) the physiology of menopause and its symptoms; (2) the pros and cons of treatments, including medication, behavioral approaches, and alternative remedies; (3) the latest research on hormone replacement therapy; and (4) recent developments in the prevention of chronic disease at menopause such as osteoporosis, heart disease, and cancer. An extended discussion of the potential benefits and hazards of hormone replacement therapy includes results of the latest studies on various forms and combinations of HRT. Other major sections address treatments for insomnia, depression, and sexual dysfunction related to menopause. Both pharmacological and behavioral approaches are included. Alternative remedies are also discussed, including black cohosh, valerian, and others. A final section is devoted to research findings on reducing chronic health risks through medications and lifestyle changes such as exercise, sleep hygiene, nutrition, and supplements.
