For over two decades, the Center for Disease Control has studied how childhood experiences have a lifelong impact on individuals. The ongoing Adverse Childhood Experiences Study links experiences such as violence, abuse, or neglect, exposure to substance use, incarceration to toxic stress which can contribute to emotional, behavioral and physical issues. These can result in negative consequences in adult life. CDC reports, 1 in 6 adults experienced four or more types of ACEs and At least 5 of the top 10 leading causes of death are associated with ACEs. The long-lasting effects of ACES can be mitigated through approaches that include trauma informed care, intervention, prevention and resiliency enhancement.
