Survivors of trauma often struggle with substance use, yet many trauma clinicians feel unprepared to address these co occurring challenges. Have you ever considered referring a client elsewhere due to substance misuse? This interactive workshop will provide case discussions, practical exercises, and tools to help you confidently treat both traumatic stress and substance misuse. Well explore the complex relationship between these disorders and introduce evidence based interventions, including Brief overview of the Neurobiological and psychological connections between trauma and substance use. Best practices for screening and assessment of cooccurring PTSD and SUD. Integrated treatment approaches using trauma informed and trauma focused care, alongside abstinence and harm reduction strategies modalities for problematic substance use. Strategies for managing treatment challenges, including avoidance, relapse risk, and balancing trauma processing with recovery. Drs. Hien and Litt are leaders in treating traumatic stress and substance use disorders. Their new book, Treating Traumatic Stress and Substance Misuse A Guide to Integrative Practice, provides a foundation for this workshop. Lisa Caren Litt, Ph.D. is Associate Professor at The New School for Social Research. Denise Hien, Ph.D., ABPP, is Senior Vice Provost of Research and Director of the Center of Alcohol & Substance Use Studies at Rutgers University.
