Managing Medication: Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders

Course overview

Psychotic disorders, when not clearly caused by another issue such as substance use or a medical problem, typically indicate a 'schizophrenia spectrum disorder.' Psychotic disorders affect fewer people than mood disorders but still cause significant disability worldwide. Over 3 million Americans experience schizophrenia each year (Ringeisen et al., 2023). Despite stigma and severe stereotypes associated with this diagnosis, there is hope for individuals and their families in recovery. Thanks to ongoing research, treatments for schizophrenia continue to improve, and new medications are being developed. Scientists are also gaining a better understanding of what causes these disorders. Although there is currently no cure, many people with schizophrenia can successfully manage their symptoms, leading independent and meaningful lives.
