Understanding and Treating Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) for Psychologists

Course overview

This continuing education course provides licensed psychologists with an evidence-based framework for understanding, assessing, and treating Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) across clinical settings. The course explores the diagnostic features outlined in the DSM-5, the spectrum of narcissism (from adaptive to maladaptive), and the developmental, neurobiological, and environmental factors contributing to NPD. Through a comprehensive comparison with other personality disorders, psychologists will be equipped to conduct accurate differential diagnoses. Participants will engage with empirically supported therapeutic approaches, including psychodynamic therapy, schema-focused therapy, and CBT modifications, tailored to the unique interpersonal and motivational challenges of working with narcissistic clients. The course also addresses ethical issues, countertransference, and methods to support individuals impacted by narcissistic abuse.
