NASW-TX: Running for Office as a Social Worker

Course overview

Social work ethics include "social and political action". Hear from three social workers and NASW members who take action to the next level by running for office. Reggie Harris shares how is social work background led him to run for Cincinnati City Council and why being social worker makes him uniquely tuned into community issues. Then we hear from Ali Ramos and Audrey Spanko on their experiences as social workers running at the local and state-level, respectively. Ali speaks to how social work skills helped her tune in to constituent concerns about local policy dilemmas and how she combatted stereotypes about local government. Audrey shared her perspective on how important community building and networking is for running for office and how social workers across the state helped connect and support her during her run for state senate. Attendees will leave encouraged to support social workers for office and better understand how running for office as a social worker is a great example of our ethical call to social and political action.
