Course overview

Best practices dictate that effective pharmacists are fully versed on different types of pain; their pathophysiology; how it is communicated to the body; and how it is perceived by the patient. After the pharmacist has concluded this knowledge-based activity, they will be able to: • Define pain in general terms; • Recognize the individuality of pain and its perception; • Distinguish between different sources and types of pain; • Recognize the extent of the pain problem, as well as its cost to society; • Adopt a general understanding of the process of pain signaling; •Familiarize themselves with the main sources of pain experienced by patients; •Familiarize themselves with the various treatment options available to combat pain- to include potential indications and side effects, for each; •Become aware of the use of acupuncture, and how it may be integrated into an individualized pain management strategy.
