Course overview

This training provides a foundational understanding of Applied Behavior Analysis what it is, how it works, and how it intersects with brain-based conditions such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Participants will learn about the importance of adapting ABA for neurodiverse learners and how caregivers can be empowered to make informed, individualized decisions regarding therapy. Learning Objectives and Key Takeaways include What is ABA and How It Works: ABA uses structured reinforcement to teach and shape behavior. When individualized, it can be an effective tool for learning new skills. Not all children respond the same, personalization is critical. What we're asking the brain to do: ABA relies on repetition and reinforcement to build neural pathways. Children with brain-based differences (e.g. FASD) may require more time, flexibility, and consistency. Cognitive and executive function challenges should be considered. Why ABA Works for Some, not other success with ABA varies based on how well it aligns with the child's neurological profile. FASD can affect memory, impulse control, and learning stability - adaptation to standard ABA methods is key. Making ABA More accessible for Children with FASD Modify pacing: slow down and simplify instructions. Use visual supports, predictable routines, and connection-based strategies. Prioritize regulation before instruction. Helping Parents Talk to ABA Providers & Find the Right Therapy Fit. This training is a collaboration with Dr. Jacqueline Pei, the University of Alberta.
