Course overview

Studies show that people are more likely to follow orders even if they disagree with them when they feel the process leading to the order is procedurally just. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based technique first used in mental health settings that helps create solutions to problems a person needs to overcome. MI is already used successfully as part of problem-solving courts and juvenile justice to reduce resistance and promote positive behavior change. Real-world examples will demonstrate how jurists can use MI in these and other court settings to support effective outcomes while delivering a procedurally just court experience.
