With the understanding that all behavior is communication, it is critically important that as therapists, parents, and teachers we understand exactly what a child is trying to share with us. Being able to identify differences in fear, anxiety, frustration and boredom-based behaviors goes a long way in determining the timing, intensity and type of intervention approach we use. This 2-hour, view-on-demand, recorded webinar explores challenging behaviors from a brain-based perspective, providing both research-based understanding on the neurology behind a child's behavior as well as a wealth of practical, immediately-applicable strategies and resources. When we understand the region of the brain the child is "speaking from," we can target neurodevelopmentally sound strategies for regulation and learning. This course will transform the way we look at what children are telling us through how they behave. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) state the neurological underpinnings of an adult's regulatory effect on a child's emotional state, (2) identify three brain-based de-escalation strategies for groups and individuals, (3) list the differences between threat-based interventions (amygdala) and logic-based interventions (prefrontal cortex), and when and how to apply each, and (4) identify three proactive strategies to promote safety, regulation, and executive functioning skills, so children may more fully participate in activities of daily living. This distance-learning, independent format is offered at 0.2 CEUs, Introductory Level, OT Service Delivery, Foundational Knowledge, and targeted to introductory-level pediatric OTs, SLPs, PTs, educators, parents, and other pediatric professionals. The course instructor, Lori Benson Adams, MEd, is an educational intervention specialist and owner of Breakthrough Learning Solutions.
