Course overview

This 1-hour course provides BLS providers with essential knowledge and skills for the use of a glucometer. Content covers the causes of altered mental status, normal and abnormal glucose metabolism, recognition and treatment of Type I and II diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, and hypoglycemia. Emphasis is placed on accurate blood glucose measurement, proper use and care of the glucometer, and integration of results into appropriate patient management, including the drug profile and administration of oral glucose.
