Digital Dignity: Ethical AI Use in Mental Health Settings

This self-paced CEU explores the ethical and clinical implications of artificial intelligence (AI) in mental health practice, with a particular focus on how technology affects clients whose cultural and linguistic backgrounds may not be adequately represented in mainstream data systems. Clinicians increasingly encounter AI-driven transcription, translation, and predictive tools that promise efficiency but also risk replicating systemic bias, flattening cultural narratives, and undermining client dignity. Through the framework of digital dignity, participants will critically examine AI's promises and pitfalls, identify where algorithms miss cultural nuance, and develop strategies to integrate technology in ways that are ethical, transparent, and culturally humble. Case studies illustrate real-world dilemmas such as misinterpreted trauma narratives, biased risk assessments, and gaps in consent. Participants will leave with a toolkit of responsive practices, reflection worksheets, and consent templates to safeguard equity and dignity in digital mental health. This course meets continuing education requirements by emphasizing both clinical application and ethical standards, aligning with the NASW Code of Ethics, APA Ethics Code, Belmont Report principles, and the Florida Administrative Code.
