Course overview

No matter your role at your organization, it is essential for you to understand the federal laws and regulations governing the privacy of healthcare information in general and substance use treatment information specifically. After taking this course, you should be able to identify challenges that clients and providers experience when sharing information about substance use disorders. You will be able to explain the intent of 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA, including how these regulations apply to individuals in substance use disorder treatment programs. In addition, you will be able to discuss clients' rights to access their health information and understand the permissible practices for disclosing their protected health information. This course is not a substitute for legal advice. As you go through the following content, please note that this course focuses on federal law. However, every state has its own privacy and confidentiality laws, and it is the responsibility of a healthcare professional to know their states laws and regulations.
