Lifting and Moving Patients

Course overview

This 2 hour course prepares EMS providers to lift, move, and carry patients safely using sound body mechanics, clear team communication, and appropriate equipment. Learners review spine anatomy and common injury mechanisms, posture and stacking principles, power and squat lifts, pushing and pulling techniques, and when to use emergency, urgent, and non-urgent moves. The course covers operation of stretchers and devices such as stair chairs, scoop, portable, vacuum, basket, and bariatric stretchers, with emphasis on partner coordination, patient safety, and back injury prevention.
