OBJECTIVES
Following this course, participants will:
- Explain the history, demographics, and cultural identity of U.S. military personnel.
- Recognize the psychological impacts of military service, including trauma, PTSD, TBI, depression, and substance use.
- Assess the challenges faced by military families, including spousal adjustment, parenting, and reintegration stressors.
- Identify barriers to care, including stigma, systemic challenges, and disparities among rural, minority, and underserved veterans.
- Apply evidence-based clinical interventions tailored to the needs of veterans and their families.
- Connect clients with appropriate VA and community-based resources, while advocating for systemic improvements in care.
Course overview
This course provides licensed professional counselors and social workers with an in-depth understanding of military culture, the veteran experience, and evidence-based strategies for addressing the mental health needs of veterans and their families. Drawing on historical, cultural, psychological, and clinical perspectives, this training equips participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to provide culturally competent and effective care to one of the nation's most diverse and underserved populations. This course is written by Gwendolyn Green, LMHC MCAP LPC, co-owner and director of education of AA Ross Counseling, and is a licensed mental health clinician in Florida, Washington, West Virginia, and Vermont.
