On-demand (recorded) course Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy with strong evidence indicating that it significantly improves relationship satisfaction and reduces conflict for couples (Beasley & Ager, 2019). At the same time, there are numerous nuances to learn when practicing effective EFT with couples. All EFT therapists have felt the tension between the need to stay attuned to our clients and following their lead, versus the need to maintain our focus on present process emotions. For the EFT couples therapist, this means learning to distinguish between a block, which requires staying on mission, and provision of useful new information, which might require the therapist to pivot to a new focus. In this webinar, the presenter will explore how to respond when couples therapy clients are blocking access to their feelings. The use of concrete, vivid, and specific triggers to regain focus will be explored. The presenter will also discuss how poorly timed psychoeducation may inadvertently pivot the couples therapy client away from emotion and experience. Participants in this webinar will leave with a greater understanding of how to effectively use psychoeducation and triggers in EFT couples therapy. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training programs.
