Cutaneous Manifestations of Systemic Disease

Course overview

Patients with endocrinopathies including hypothyroidism, hypercortisolism, sex hormone dermatoses, feline hyperthyroidism, and feline acquired cutaneous fragility are presented to clinicians in part and occasionally solely for skin and ear changes. This presentation will review common cutaneous clinical signs of endocrinopathies along with management options for the cutaneous changes. Confounding changes when endocrine disease patients also have allergies will be presented. Following the endocrine section, superficial necrolytic dermatitis (hepatocutaneous syndrome) will be reviewed with a focus on the diagnosis and management of cutaneous changes. Lastly, three immune mediated diseases that often have significant skin involvement (acute febrile neutrophilic dermatitis, eosinophilic dermatitis with edema, and sterile panniculitis) will be identified. Discriminating clinical features of these immune mediated diseases will be discussed along with ways to distinguish them from infectious diseases that can appear similar.
