Course overview

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a complex and heterogeneous group of hematologic malignancies with varying clinical presentations, molecular subtypes, and therapeutic approaches. This course equips licensed nurses with comprehensive knowledge of AML pathophysiology, classification systems (WHO and ICC), diagnostic evaluation, and evidence-based treatment protocols. The content explores induction and post-remission therapy in fit and medically unfit adults, pediatric AML, complications such as CNS involvement, and relapse management. Emphasis is placed on nursing roles in care coordination, supportive care, patient education, psychosocial support, and survivorship. By understanding AML at both the cellular and clinical levels, nurses will be better prepared to participate in interdisciplinary planning and improve outcomes for patients across the lifespan. CE Ready is an ANCC accredited provider of nursing continuing education. Learning Objectives By the end of this course, the participant will be able to: Describe the pathophysiology and molecular mechanisms underlying acute myeloid leukemia, including risk factors and common mutations. Differentiate between major AML classification systems and explain how cytogenetic and molecular features influence diagnosis and treatment. Identify hallmark clinical signs and symptoms of AML and outline appropriate diagnostic procedures, including CNS evaluation and bone marrow analysis. Compare treatment options for AML in different populations, including fit adults, older adults, pediatric patients, and those with relapsed or refractory disease. Apply evidence-based nursing strategies to support symptom management, education, and psychosocial care for patients with AML across treatment phases.
