Substance Use Disorder and Prevention
Tracking # 20-1337719
Course overview
Substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex and chronic condition that affects individuals across all demographics and care settings. This comprehensive course equips nurses with the knowledge and tools to identify, prevent, and manage SUD using trauma-informed and evidence-based approaches. Key topics include epidemiology, early screening and intervention, adolescent and perinatal considerations, pharmacologic and psychosocial therapies, and the role of interdisciplinary care. Emphasis is placed on prevention strategies, motivational interviewing, continuing care, and supporting patients with co-occurring mental health disorders. Nurses will deepen their understanding of SUD as both a behavioral and medical condition and leave with practical skills for compassionate, nonjudgmental care. Learning Objectives By the end of this course, the participant will be able to: Describe the epidemiology and risk factors associated with substance use disorders across the lifespan. Apply evidence-based screening and assessment tools for early identification of substance use and risk. Compare pharmacologic and psychosocial treatment modalities, including contingency management and motivational interviewing. Recognize special considerations for adolescent, pregnant, and dual-diagnosis populations in SUD prevention and care. Integrate trauma-informed, person-centered approaches into nursing practice to support SUD recovery and long-term health outcomes.
